Four Things I Wish I Knew Before My Kids Became Teenagers

Parenting teenagers can be tough. How can sweet, little angels turn into self-centered, insubordinate doppelgangers of themselves when they become teens?


Being a parent is not for the faint of heart. This is especially so when you are the parent of teenagers. It’s so bizarre to me that these sweet, little angels can turn into ornery, self-centered, insubordinate doppelgangers of themselves once they hit puberty, but as the mother of teenagers, I have witnessed it first-hand. I have three teenage daughters and one son who is almost a teenager, so I was officially initiated into the “Moms of Teenagers Club” some time ago. If you’re not a member of that club, I’m sure you know some moms who are. Sometimes you will see these moms in the grocery store with messy hair and dark circles under their eyes, stocking up on Tylenol or maybe even wine if they have been club members for a while. If you see these women, please smile at them; let them know you feel their pain. Yes, parenting teens is an adventure, and I have learned a few things along the way that I wish I had known a little earlier.

As parents, we are responsible for teaching, encouraging, and instilling values in our children, while doing so with a balance of compassion and discipline. This is not always easy.
